About the Golden Bean

The Golden Bean is the world’s largest coffee roasters competition and conference.

We are in the business of finding Australia’s and NZ’s best coffee roasters within seven categories, from the one-man backyard specialty roaster right through to large corporations.This event has been running now for seventeen years in Australia and is in its sixth year in North America. What happens after you enter your coffee

After we have received your entry we will send you Golden Bean entry instructions, conference information as well as ten Golden Bean coffee bags for you to send back to us filled with your coffee bean entries.

How the judging works

Winners of all seven categories are awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. The seven categories are:

The Golden Bean Champion

To become a Golden Bean Champion, and take home a custom Reg Barber made Golden Bean Trophy, roasters need to enter a coffee into three categories:

To become the Overall Golden Bean Champion we add the scores of your Espresso, Milk-Based and Filter coffees together.

Winners of categories 4, 5, 6 & 7 are awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, but scores do not contribute to Overall Champion.

Coffee Production Stations    

(Engine Room) The Engine Room is a closed room, separate to the judging area and will consist of:

  • Head Barista to manage the Engine Room
  • 4 x espresso coffee production stations
  • 4 x Rancilio RS-1 3 Group
  • 2 x professional baristas per machine
  • 1 x grinder per machine
  • Pre-coded bags i.e. blind tasting process

The fine print:
You cannot bring coffee with you. You will need to send it in advance to be eligible to compete.
It is the responsibility of the roaster to choose the delivery date of their coffee (within the window of dates advised) to ensure it is at its best on the days of judging.
